The caboose has been part of railroading for many decades. Whether called crummy, hack, waycar, cabin car, doghouse, cab or any of at least ten other nicknames, the caboose has been home on wheels to many crewmen. Cabooses in many styles, shapes and sizes have hauled passengers and freight in addition to their rear end duties. Fred's (Flashing rear end devices) are now replacing many cabooses as a battery-powered EOT device that maintains a radio telemetry with the head end of its train.
