MOFFAT TUNNEL RIO GRANDE SD40T-2 & F-9

he Denver and Rio Grande took delivery of the first P units in 1934 with the P-7 model. The final tally of Rio Grande P units totaled 152 by 1955. As the last of the P units all faded away in 1974 Rio Grande received the first of their 23 SD40T-2 "Tunnel Motors", delivered for mountain service and to this day represent Rio Grande's big power, rated at 3,000 HP. Completed in 1927, Moffat Tunnel is 6.2 miles long and crosses the Continental Divide at 9,242 feet above sea level.
